PUBLIC WORKS WORKER
Beginning salary: $3929.00 to $4,427.00 per month
The Public Works Worker serves as member the City's Public Works crew and performs a wide variety of jobs involving heavy equipment operation; maintenance of water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, streets, parks, City property and City buildings; development inspections; water meter reading and repair; and vehicle and equipment repair. The Utility Worker also responds to emergencies and helps respond to Public Works related complaints, questions, or other matters.
Work is performed indoors and outdoors during all weather conditions during daylight hours and at night in emergencies. The work is in a high-risk environment that requires special safety precautions around heavy equipment operation; possible contact with human waste and blood-borne pathogens; and prolonged physical efforts within confined spaces. Emergency service call-outs may involve floods; snow removal; emergency repair to streets, parks, the water and sewer system; and other problems in all weather conditions with proximity to traffic, heavy operating equipment, and other hazards.
A preferred candidate will have three to five years of building, craft, trade, or other public works related construction and equipment operation experience and will be expected to have a working knowledge of heavy equipment operation including backhoes, bulldozers, loaders and dump trucks. Experience in concrete work, asphalt placement and patching, and water and sewer pipeline systems is ideal. Applicants should also demonstrate excellent teamwork and communications skills. The completion of a high school level education (as evidenced by a diploma or GED) or its equivalent will be required. There will be knowledge and physical testing.
